WHAT YOU NEED

Tramping’s a lifestyle as much as a job. Out Monday morning, back Friday night. You’ll see more of Britain than most people who reckon they love travelling. Your cab’s your office. Some weeks your bedroom too. It’s not for everyone, but the drivers who love it wouldn’t swap it for anything. Especially not when the night-out money’s tax-free.

Cat C+E, tramping is exclusively artic work.

Standard requirements. Tachograph compliance is particularly important for tramping drivers because you’re managing multi-day driving and rest periods.

  • Daily driving limit: 9 hours (extendable to 10 hours twice per week)
  • Daily rest: 11 hours (reducible to 9 hours, three times between weekly rests)
  • Weekly rest: 45 hours (can be reduced to 24 hours, but must be compensated within 3 weeks)
  • Fortnightly driving limit: 90 hours maximum

A sleeping bag or duvet, pillow, basic toiletries, portable cooking kit (many drivers use a 12V or gas stove), phone charger, torch, hi-vis clothing, steel-toe boots.

WHAT THE WORK LOOKS LIKE

Tramping means sleeping in your cab overnight, Monday to Friday, sometimes longer depending on the work. You get trunk runs between distribution centres, port collections, customer deliveries across the country. One night you’re parked up at a truck stop in Warrington. Next night it’s a layby outside Carlisle. You need to know your tachograph rules inside out because multi-day driving means managing your hours properly is everything. Mess it up and you’re parked up for a 45-hour weekly rest whether you want to be or not.

WHO HIRES THEM

General haulage, pallet networks, supermarket trunking, container distribution, freight forwarding, automotive logistics, and building supplies. Basically anything that needs moving long distance.

PAY & PROGRESSION

Hourly rates: £20–£26/hr
Night-out allowance: £26.20/night (tax-free)
Weekend premiums: Time and a half or double time (varies by employer)
Effective annual: £45,000–£60,000 including allowances

Who it suits: People who value independence, enjoy driving, and don’t have commitments that require them to be home every night. Many trampers describe it as the most financially rewarding period of their driving career.

Who it doesn’t suit: Anyone with young children, a partner who objects to the time away, or anyone who struggles with the isolation. Be honest with yourself before committing, it’s better to try it for a few weeks via agency work before accepting a permanent tramping contract.

A typical week: 50 hours at £22/hr = £1,100 + 4 nights × £26.20 = £104.80 night-out allowance. That’s £1,204.80/week before tax. Over 48 working weeks: approximately £57,800. Top earners with weekend work exceed £60,000.
In your cab. Modern tractor units have a proper single or double bunk bed behind the seats. It’s not glamorous, but a good cab with a decent mattress is surprisingly comfortable. Many drivers invest in their own mattress topper and bedding.
Very rarely. Almost all tramping work requires Cat C+E because of the distances and load types involved. Some rigid tramping exists in specialist sectors, but it’s uncommon.
Truck stops, motorway services, layby areas, and some customer sites offer overnight parking. Some charge (£15–£30/night), some are free. Experienced trampers plan their routes around reliable overnight spots.
Absolutely. Register with agencies that offer tramping work, you can try it for a week or two without a permanent commitment. This is the best way to find out if it suits your lifestyle.
