FRIDGE DRIVER HGV JOBS UK - REFRIGERATED & TEMPERATURE-CONTROLLED SPECIALISTS

THE COLD CHAIN RUNS THROUGH THEM. FRESH FOOD REACHES SUPERMARKET SHELVES BECAUSE OF THEM.

WHAT YOU NEED

Fridge drivers keep the country fed. Those 4am deliveries to Tesco’s back dock? That’s a fridge driver. Cold-chain pharmaceutical runs where the cargo’s worth more than your house? Fridge driver. Multi-temp trailers running chilled at +2° in one compartment and frozen at -25° in another? Yeah, fridge driver. They understand temperature compliance in a way that’d bore most people to tears, but it’s what keeps the food safe.

Cat C for rigid fridge vehicles (7.5t–18t). Cat C+E for articulated fridge trailers (the majority of temperature-controlled work).

Reefer unit operation (Thermo King, Carrier Transicold), temperature monitoring and logging, HACCP awareness (food hygiene, Level 2 minimum recommended), multi-temperature compartment management, cleaning and sanitisation protocols.

  • Chilled: +2°C to +8°C
  • Frozen: -18°C to -25°C
  • Multi-temp: Separate compartments at different temperatures
  • Pharmaceutical: +2°C to +25°C (depending on product)

WHAT THE WORK LOOKS LIKE

Temperature-controlled work is all about maintaining the cold chain. If products drop out of their required range, even briefly, you could be looking at an entire load rejected. Thousands of pounds, literally in the bin. So you’re checking reefer unit temperatures constantly, recording them at every delivery point, and making sure doors aren’t left open longer than they need to be. It’s methodical work. But supermarkets and food manufacturers pay a premium for drivers who understand it properly.

WHO HIRES THEM

The big supermarkets (Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s, M&S, Aldi, Lidl), food manufacturers, catering wholesalers like Brakes and Bidfood, pharmaceutical cold chain companies, dairy distributors, and seafood logistics firms.

PAY & PROGRESSION

Rates: Standard Cat C/C+E rates + £1–2/hr cold chain premium in most cases
Typical hourly: £19–£24/hr (days), £21–£26/hr (nights)
Annual: £38,000–£48,000 depending on shift pattern and overtime

Why the premium? Fridge work involves additional responsibility (temperature compliance), early start times, and specialist knowledge. The premium is modest but consistent, and the work is steady, the UK always needs food delivered.

Progression: Pharmaceutical cold chain work (higher rates, more precision). Multi-temp trailer expertise. Quality/compliance roles within distribution companies. Transport management in food logistics.

COMMON QUESTIONS

No additional driving licence is needed. Cat C or C+E covers the vehicle. What you need is knowledge of reefer unit operation, HACCP awareness, and temperature monitoring, most of which is learned on the job or through short courses.
Loading and unloading at chilled or frozen docks can be cold, but you’re not inside the trailer for extended periods. Proper clothing (thermal layers, gloves) makes a significant difference. The cab itself is normal temperature.
Contact your controller immediately. The load is time-sensitive. Most companies have 24/7 reefer breakdown cover. Your job is to report it fast and follow instructions, not to fix it yourself.
HACCP Level 2 (Food Safety in Transport) courses are typically £30–£80 online and take 3–5 hours. It’s a worthwhile investment that opens up all food-grade transport work.
A multi-temperature trailer has separate compartments that can be set to different temperatures, for example, one section at +3°C for chilled goods and another at -22°C for frozen. It requires more attention during loading and delivery but commands higher rates.
