SKIP AND TIPPER DRIVER JOBS UK - CONSTRUCTION & WASTE HGV SPECIALISTS

EARLY STARTS. PHYSICAL WORK. A DRIVER WHO CAN REVERSE ANYWHERE.

WHAT YOU NEED

Skip and tipper drivers are built different. Up before 6. Out in all weathers on construction sites, quarries, and waste transfer stations. They know their vehicle’s width to the nearest inch. They can reverse a skip loader down a terraced street where the residents have parked like they’re the only people who exist. Physical work, early starts, proper grafting.

Cat C minimum. Most skip and tipper work uses rigid vehicles (18t–32t). Some larger operations use Cat C+E for articulated tippers and walking-floor trailers.

Skip loaders (hook-lift and chain systems), rear-tipping rigids (from 7.5t to 32t), side-tippers, walking-floor trailers, tri-axle tippers, grab loaders.

CPCS (Construction Plant Competence Scheme) card may be required for some quarry and construction site work. NPORS is an accepted alternative at some sites. These are separate from your driving licence.

Hard hat, steel-toe boots, hi-vis (often full body), eye protection. Construction sites have strict PPE requirements.

WHAT THE WORK LOOKS LIKE

A typical day means navigating residential streets to collect skips, reversing into construction site access roads that were clearly designed for something much smaller, or hauling aggregate from quarries to building sites. It’s outdoors. It’s physical. You’ll be operating grab loaders, hooklift systems, or tipping gear most days. And it starts early, most skip rounds are planned to beat rush hour traffic. The upside? You’re generally done by mid-afternoon, and Saturdays usually pay overtime rates.

WHO HIRES THEM

Waste management, construction, demolition, quarrying, recycling, civil engineering, landscaping, and housing developers who always need muck shifting.

PAY & PROGRESSION

Hourly rates: £16–£20/hr
Annual (full-time): £30,000–£38,000
Overtime: Saturday work commonly available at enhanced rates

Why these rates? Skip and tipper work pays solid rates for Cat C work, with the advantage of being consistently local and home-every-night. The physical element means it isn’t for everyone, which helps maintain demand for drivers who can do it well.

Progression: HIAB/crane certification (for lorry-mounted cranes), grab loader operation, Cat C+E upgrade for artic tipper work, site supervisor roles, waste transfer station management.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Yes. Skip and tipper driving involves climbing in and out of the cab frequently, operating mechanical equipment, and sometimes manual work on site. It’s not desk work. You don’t need to be an athlete, but reasonable fitness is important.
Skip collection requires reversing into driveways, car parks, and narrow streets, often with parked cars on both sides and limited visibility. It’s a skill that improves with practice. Experienced skip drivers make it look effortless.
Construction Plant Competence Scheme card. Some quarries and large construction sites require it for vehicle operation on their premises. It involves a theory test, practical assessment, and health/safety check. Your employer will usually arrange and pay for this.
Related but different. Skip work focuses on collecting and delivering skips (waste containers). Tipper work involves hauling bulk materials (aggregates, soil, demolition waste) in tipping vehicles. Some drivers do both; others specialise.
Typically 18t–32t rigid vehicles. Skip loaders use hook-lift or chain mechanisms to load/unload skips. Tippers use hydraulic ram systems to tip loads. Your employer will provide vehicle-specific training.
