CLASS 1 HGV DRIVER JOBS UK - CATEGORY C+E ARTIC SPECIALISTS

THE LONG ROAD. THE BIG RIG. THE ONE EVERYONE NOTICES.

THE LICENCE EXPLAINED

You know those artics pulling out of service stations at 4am? That’s a Class 1 driver. They’ve mastered the art of reversing 44 tonnes into a bay that looks about two inches wider than the trailer. They know every decent truck stop between Dover and Dundee. And they’re the most in-demand drivers in the country.

Articulated vehicle combinations, a tractor unit plus trailer, up to 44 tonnes gross vehicle weight. This is the ‘Class 1’ licence in recruitment terminology.

You must already hold Cat C. Then: Group 2 medical (if not already valid), Cat C+E theory test, Cat C+E practical driving test (including coupling/uncoupling), Driver CPC (if not already held). The practical test includes reversing an articulated combination, widely considered one of the hardest parts.

£1,500–£2,500 on top of Cat C (for the C+E trailer upgrade). Total from car licence: £3,500–£6,000.

2-4 weeks for the C+E upgrade if you already hold Cat C.

WHAT THE WORK LOOKS LIKE

Class 1 work is as varied as it gets. Monday you might be trunking pallets between distribution centres on a straightforward run down the M1. Tuesday could be delivering building materials on a flatbed where you’re strapping the load yourself. Wednesday you’re pulling a container out of Felixstowe. No two weeks look the same, which is exactly why a lot of drivers stick with artic work, it doesn’t get boring.

WHO HIRES THEM

The big supermarket RDCs (Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s), freight forwarders, container logistics companies, builders’ merchants, pallet networks like Palletways and TPN, automotive, and general haulage firms up and down the country.

PAY & PROGRESSION

Day rates: £18–£22/hr
Night rates: £20–£26/hr
Annual (Full-time perm): £38,000–£52,000
Tramping: + £26.20/night (HMRC approved rate) + weekend premiums

ADR certification opens up dangerous goods work at £2–4/hr premium. HIAB crane certification adds another specialism. Some drivers move into transport management, driver training, or start their own owner-driver businesses. The Cat C+E licence is the most versatile qualification in UK logistics.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Class 1 = Cat C+E (artic, tractor + trailer). Class 2 = Cat C (rigid, no trailer). Class 1 is the higher qualification with higher pay rates.
It’s challenging but very learnable. You’ll reverse an articulated combination into a bay marked by cones. Practice is key, most training providers include dedicated reversing sessions. Thousands of people pass it every year.
No. Cat C is a prerequisite for Cat C+E. You must pass the rigid test first, then take the trailer upgrade. Some training providers offer a combined Cat C + C+E course over 3–4 weeks.
You’re out Monday morning and back Friday night. Sleep in your cab (modern cabs have a proper bed, heating, fridge). Night-out allowance of £26.20/night tax-free. It suits people who value independence and don’t mind being away from home. It doesn’t suit everyone, and that’s fine.
Very quickly. There’s a significant shortage of Class 1 drivers in the UK. Many agencies will have work available within days of you passing your test, though newly qualified drivers may start on slightly lower rates until they build experience.
