TANKER DRIVER JOBS UK - SPECIALIST LIQUID CARGO HGV

PRECISION. PATIENCE. A CERTIFICATE THAT OPENS DOORS NOBODY ELSE CAN.

TANKER REQUIREMENTS

Tanker work sits at the sharp end of HGV driving. A fuel tanker pulling into a filling station forecourt. A chemical tanker backing into a processing plant. A milk tanker collecting from a farm at 2am when it’s minus three outside. The cargo is specialist, the protocols are exact, and the pay reflects it.

Cat C+E (most tanker work is artic). Cat C for rigid tankers (smaller fuel bowsers, milk collection).

Mandatory for fuel and chemical tankers. Minimum: ADR core + tank endorsement. Class 3 (flammable liquids) is essential for fuel work. Chemical tankers may require additional class certifications.

ADR not required, but food hygiene certification (HACCP Level 2 minimum) is expected. CPC, clean licence, and experience are the key requirements.

Pump and discharge operation, dip-stick gauging, COSHH awareness, site entry permits, spill response procedures, load security for liquid cargo.

WHAT THE WORK LOOKS LIKE

You’re not just a driver when you’re on tankers. You’re responsible for loading, transporting, and discharging liquid cargo without spilling a drop. Every delivery involves paperwork checks, hose connections, pump operation, and sometimes dip-stick gauging to verify quantities. Get it wrong with fuel and you’ve got a serious environmental incident. Get it wrong with chemicals and it could be much worse. But get it right, consistently, and you’re one of the best-paid drivers on the road.

WHO HIRES THEM

Fuel distribution, chemical manufacturing, dairy farms and processing, food production, pharmaceutical companies, water utilities, waste management, and even breweries and distilleries.

PAY & PROGRESSION

Hourly rates: £22–£30/hr
Annual: £48,000–£60,000+
Top earners: Fuel tanker drivers with ADR tank + extensive experience exceed £60,000/yr

Why the premium? Tanker driving requires additional certifications, specialist skills, and carries higher responsibility. The driver is personally responsible for safe loading and discharge. Insurance requirements are higher. The pool of qualified drivers is smaller. All of this drives pay upward.

Progression: Multi-product tanker endorsements, DGSA qualification, transport management, owner-driver contracts with fuel companies.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Most employers prefer some artic experience first, but many fuel companies run their own training programmes for newly ADR-qualified drivers. Getting your ADR with tank endorsement is the first step.
Less so than multi-drop or construction work, but you will handle hoses, operate manual valves, and climb onto vehicle platforms for dipping and checking. General fitness is important.
ADR training covers emergency response procedures in detail. You’ll carry spill kits, TREMCARDS, and PPE. The protocols are clear and well-rehearsed. Serious incidents are rare precisely because the training is thorough.
Yes. Food-grade tankers carrying non-hazardous liquids (milk, edible oils, water) don’t require ADR. You’ll need food hygiene certification (HACCP) instead.
Fuel (petroleum) tanker driving consistently offers the highest rates, followed by chemical tankers. Food-grade is typically lower but still above standard artic rates.
