MULTI-DROP HGV DRIVER JOBS UK - HIGH VOLUME DELIVERY SPECIALISTS

FAST. EFFICIENT. NEVER MORE THAN 90 SECONDS AT ANY DOOR.

WHAT YOU NEED

Multi-drop isn’t for the faint-hearted. Eighty drops before 2pm. You know exactly how long a tail-lift takes without even thinking about it. You can read a round sheet at a glance and spot when they’ve put the Croydon drop between two Brixton ones. Part delivery driver, part logistics genius, part customer service rep, and somehow you make it look easy.

Cat C minimum. Most multi-drop work uses 7.5t–18t rigid vehicles. Some pallet network trunk work requires Cat C+E.

Tail-lift certification (MOFFETT or similar), handheld PDA/scanning device proficiency, route planning, manual handling training.

Multi-drop is the most physically demanding category of HGV work. You will lift, carry, and stack regularly. Some roles involve hand-balling individual items; others use pump trucks and tail-lifts. Either way, you need to be fit.

WHAT THE WORK LOOKS LIKE

Your day starts early. Usually 4am, sometimes earlier. Load up at the depot, scan everything, and hit the road before rush hour kicks in. Then it’s a pre-planned route, 15 to 80+ drops depending on the run. Every stop is get in, get out, get the signature, move on. Time management is everything. Fall behind on the first five drops and you’re playing catch-up all day. The best multi-drop drivers have a rhythm. They don’t rush, they just don’t waste a single minute.

WHO HIRES THEM

Retail chains, wholesale delivery, builders’ merchants, catering suppliers, office equipment companies, pallet networks, and parcel firms for the bigger items that won’t fit in a Transit.

PAY & PROGRESSION

Day rates: £140–£180/day (often structured as a fixed daily rate rather than hourly)
Bonus structures: Many employers pay a per-drop bonus above a target threshold (e.g., £1.50 per drop above 60 drops)
Annual: £32,000–£40,000
Hours: Typically 10–12 hour days, Monday–Friday, with optional Saturday overtime

Progression: Multi-drop experience is highly transferable. Many drivers move into route planning, depot supervision, or transport management. Others upgrade to Cat C+E for trunk work at higher hourly rates. The customer-facing skills developed in multi-drop are valued across the industry.

COMMON QUESTIONS

This varies enormously by sector. Pallet network work: 15–25 drops. Building merchant delivery: 8–15 drops. Parcel/small item: 60–100+ drops. The round sheet will tell you what to expect.
Mostly, yes. Even with tail-lifts and pump trucks, you’ll be on your feet for most of the day and handling goods at every stop. It’s not for anyone with back problems or low fitness levels.
Most employers provide handheld PDAs with integrated navigation or a vehicle-mounted satnav. Having your own as a backup is useful but not essential.
Follow your employer’s failed delivery procedure, usually a calling card, a photo of the delivery point, and a notification via the PDA. Don’t leave goods unattended unless specifically authorised.
Yes. Having C+E means you can also take on trunk legs between depots, which are typically less physical and better paid. It widens your options significantly.
